Am I really the first to bird-dog this? Looks epic, and also there's dwarves singing, which we approve of. I like the looks of the dwarves. Apparently this is attached to TinTin in the states, so if anyone sees it in 3D tell us if it looks any good.

Am I really the first to bird-dog this?... Well, in all fairness, you're like 17 hours ahead of us in time, so technically you're living in the future. Here's the apple trailer site for it trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/thehobbit/

I'm excited. I'm glad they have Ian Holm as old Bilbo in the completely unnecessary wraparound. Should be fun. Technically Bilbo wasn't supposed to age very much between the Hobbit and LOTR because the ring slowed his aging, but the guy they've got as young Bilbo is cool. The whole cast looks cool. I think it's gonna be a good one.

There appears to be all kinds of non hobbit stuff in it. Is that Galadriel stroking Gandalf's hair??

Yes. There is a desperate need to link this to LOTR. Look for Legolas and possibly Aragorn to pop up. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun, but they're going too epic with it.

Ben and I got a laugh out of the apple website's cast list, which shows just how many cameos Peter Jackson thought were more important than the main story... Thorin is last on the cast list! I know Cate Blanchet and Christopher Lee are more famous but please. The other dwarves aren't even there.

Well, they split it into two movies; so they are going to need all the old characters to fill the time. I hope they don't skimp out on developing the dwarfs' characters in lue of links to LOTR.

Yes, hopefully those character moments in the trailer weren't all we get. Bombur falls down because he's fat! isn't a character.

To be fair, that's the level of characterization the dwarves have in the book. they basically just complain about everything and wuss out when there's work to be done, leaving Bilbo to do everything that needs doing. I just recently re-read it and it plays out almost like a children's book.
I'm sure all the LOTR stuff contributes to Gandalf's story, because in the book he would disappear all the time because he and Saruman were investigating the return of Sauron, who I believe was at that time holed up in Mirkwood and had to be run off. My assumption is that they will be fleshing out this story (which is only briefly mentioned and never dramatized in any of the books) to give these movies that direct link to LOTR.

That would be consistent with what Jackson did in LOTR. Use The Silmarillian to fill in parts of the story. I can live with that.

Oh yeah, I'm excited about this movie, but there's things I hope they do and don't do with it. Certain aspects of the LOTR adaptations annoyed me. And yes Sean, it plays like a children's book because it is a children's book. Yes they are fleshing out what Sauron was doing in Mirkwood, because they've double cast the voice of Smaug as The Necromancer as well, which is how Sauron was known. He's the Benedict Cumberbatch who also thrilled us in Sherlock (BBC modernised adaptation, not Downey jr Explosion-fest), so I'm excited about that.

It's more for younger readers than LOTR, but the Hobbit is not specifically a children's book. It's more whimsical and it's a simpler story, and apparently the links to LOTR (like the stuff about the Necromancer) were added in later editions after LOTR was published, so Jackson isn't breaking any rules they way he's linking the stories.
I support him pulling from the Silmarillion and other sources to fill out this story, I just don't want that to overshadow the whimsy of the core story. What I see in the trailer reassures me that they're interested in maintaining that aspect of it. I feel really good about the whole thing.

No Sean, I think you'll find The Hobbit was intended to be a children's book.

Well I'm only basing my information on what I saw on the dvd appendices so I could be wrong, but they decided to publish it based on the fact that the publisher's son read it and liked it. When I read it I thought it was clearly meant to be a children's book. At the very least the publishers clearly intended it to appeal to children, which makes Sean's comment that it reads like a children's book amusing because it was meant to be a children's book, even if it was also meant to be read by older readers as well. It was intended, at least by the publishers, as a children's book, which means it playing out like a children's book should be a surprise to no one. Also Ben said I was right, and he's the Tolkien authority here.
