According the the infallible Wikipedia, it was a children's book. It was later tweaked to make some parts more "adult" after LOTR was published. One part in which I recall has to do with the character of Gollum. In the original, he loses the ring in a bet and is like, "oh shucks". In the later form is when the corruption of The Ring is more obvious in his nature and he is obviously meaner and more hostile.

Yes, I've read both versions of the scene. In the original Gollum's going to give Bilbo the ring if he wins the puzzle game, but he's already dropped it so when he goes looking for it to give it to Bilbo it's not there. I liked Tolkien's way of retconning though, he just says that Bilbo told everyone the nicer version because the ring was affecting him but later Gandalf got it out of him so the new version is the truer version. Like that bit in Harry Potter. I wish they could use that in the movie.

I'm kinda surprised that no one has brought this up yet. Did anyone go see it yet? I am fearful as my initial thoughts have been echoed by many reviews. To best sum it up, I'll quote Bilbo - "Sort of stretched, like... butter scraped over too much bread."
I was hoping that one of y'all would dispel this unfortunate notion.

Yeah all the reviews say it's long and slow. I was really anxious when I heard they were making a trilogy of three hour movies out of that little book. Too much filler?
I haven't seen it yet, it's a testament to my age (old) that I don't rush out to the theaters anymore. Don't feel like competing with all the whipper snappers for a good seat on opening weekend.

I can tell you that I was very pleased with it and did not find it slow. The beginning that opens with old Bilbo and Frodo feels a little awkward, but once they get into the story they do an excellent job with the pacing and the action. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one. It's the third movie I wonder about. That one will probably have a lot of embellishing. But this one's awesome. I saw it in IMAX 3-D and that was pretty awesome too. I thought they did a good job with the tone too. The right amount of whimsy without making it inconsistent with the LOTR trilogy.

We saw it on Friday and agree with that sentiment. It was "good" but not as great as it could've been. There was too much talking and the plot was a little slow at times. And one of the things I hated in the book was the amount of singing. While they cut it down in the movie I still felt there was too many songs.

That's one of the things I'm glad they kept. They didn't overdo it, but I was afraid Jackson would cut them out like he did in LOTR.
I did like the Star Trek preview at the IMAX. They showed the first 10 minutes of the movie. It looked cool.
In fact, I'm really excited about a lot of the movies coming up. Man of Steel looks really good too. I'm so glad they built an IMAX near me. I'm gonna see all the big movies at the IMAX.

i also really enjoyed the star trek featurette.
Also I'm less ambivalent about the new Oz movie. I still feel like it can go horribly wrong but the new trailer looks really amazing.

I think it looks fun. I always thought an updated Oz was a good idea and this looks like an interesting interpretation. 1 note: The 3-D shouldn't kick in until they get to Oz. They do the B&W thing before he gets to Oz, but in the trailer those scenes are still 3-D. Commit to the concept, people.

Thank you both for he reviews. I'm not sure when I'll get my chance to see it, but I'm thankful that neither of you "bashed" it. I have no problem with slow, as long as it is building toward something.

... I have no problem with slow, as long as it is building toward something. "That's what she said" I didn't know there was a star trek preview, is that in all the imax versions?

I think it's in all the IMAX screenings, but not the regular 3-D shows.

I'm simple enough. I'd be happy with just that Lego pretzel.
