Also these movies are getting really long to fit all this crap in. There's no need to squish it all in to one big white elephant; string out the franchise, make some more money out of us, be clever!

I really think Tim Burton screwed us on this one. When he built up the Batman franchise and handed it off to Schumacher everyone was like "this should be fine. Burton's handing over the reins, but Schumacher will respect the franchise. Plus he's made some cool movies; this should be a simple transition."
Instead Schumacher came in and said "guess what? I'm a hundred years old and don't understand anything to do with Batman and I think comic books are just Saturday morning cartoons compressed into awkward gay fantasies! Come join me in a magical journey of amazing disappointment!"
And then people were like "well, at least we have the Catwoman spinoff. That should be cool." And you know how that worked out. It took Christopher Nolan to hose Batman down and get him back on his feet, and they're already talking about rebooting when he's gone.
Now studios would rather reboot than hand a successful franchise to another director. They think starting over has less potential for disappointment and they're probably right.

Reboot all you want, I really don't care about the continuity of the movie lines, just don't make me sit through the origin story again and again and again! Especially Superman. I'm begging you!

I could not agree more. The comics reboot and reimagine the concepts all the time, that's how the characters have endured from one generation to the next. But they don't normally stop the presses and re-tell the origin story. Subtle modifications en route are accepted in comics. The movies can do the same thing: Take the story anywhere you want so long as it's true to the characters, but constantly re-telling the origin is the equivalent of a person with a pathological need to introduce himself to you every time you see him.

I have to disagree with the Superman origin. The last time I remember seeing his origin on the big screen was the '78 film. As nostalgic a film this is to us older folks, it is dated. I think a clean slate for The Man of Steel is due.

I agree, I think it's sad that the one time that a new movie in continuity has been tried it flopped, that's going to scare people off again. I think you should only reboot when you have a great new idea to do, retell the origin if time has passed and you have a new spin on it. But we all know where Spiderman came from, time to think up something new. I think they should do the one where Batman is old and there's Hitler clones and Superman has a beard.

Maybe he pumps up like a Reebok. He did in the comic.
As far as Superman's origin, I think they will find a way to cover it in dialogue so that this movie works as a fresh new beginning to the franchise, but the beauty of a lasting franchise is getting the opportunity to see adventures that do more than dramatize the origin story of the character. Origins are clunky and you have to get past them to get to the good stuff. I think Zack Snyder gets that. Instead of remaking the original Superman film, as Superman Returns pretty much did, this one is a sly remake of Superman 2, which is rooted in Superman's back story enough to explain his origin to the audience without having to go back and re-tell it.

I'd be satisfied with a flashback style retelling of the origin. I'm not calling for a third of the film to be dedicated to origin; I just worry that ignoring it completely may turn off the younger audience that hasn't seen the '78 film.
Just for the record, Superman Returns - was that not supposed to be a followup to the original Superman II film? I only saw it once and that was my recollection at the time.

I know right? I know I watched that Superman movie but darned if I can remember anything about it apart from a long special feature about Brandon Routhe's hair.

Not very impressive, but there's not really enough there to judge.
Brian Singer's intent was to present Superman Returns as a continuation of the Richard Donner Superman films. He even incorporated unused footage of Brando as Jor-El to tie it in.
I'm not as critical of this movie as some, but it only serves nostalgia. It didn't bring anything new to the mythology but an awkward superbaby arc that would only be problematic in future films. I'm not against the reboot, but I wish they'd kept Brandon Routh.

As you said, not a good angle but I'm a little disappointed. She's wearing goggles! I too like Brandon Routh. He was chosen because he looks the part, and I'm down with that. He's a big dude, he works in the role. He looked like the classic chiselled Superman.
