What do you want from Disney's Star Wars sequel? Who should be in it? What should it be about? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Discuss...

I think it can be a good thing. Depends on what story they choose to make.
Personally, I'd like to see something that is independent from the many novels that have been written. It would have to have at least some of the original cast, and to be fair to them, it should take place 30 years after the events of RotJ. Luke has to be in the "Yoda" position of a new Jedi Order. Han and Leah need to have a few kids the age of Luke and Leah during ANH. They can be the primary protagonists of the series.
They have to find a way to resurrect the dark side. It could be as simple as one of Luke's students strays from the light side. That could lead to an interesting plot point of the student taking out the master, similar to Vader taking out Ben. Otherwise, you have to find a way to justify another, unseen, Sith presence: which I don't see how it could be justified. The novels (actually the comics) had a story where Palpatine had a clone facility with many copies of himself. When he died in RotJ, his "essence" was transferred to one of his clones. They could go down this path, but I'd rather see something unique.
Outside the Dark Side, there has to be a force of antagonists to battle. One way could be that the aftermath of the fall of the Empire was ugly. Not all the systems agreed to join a new Republic and the path to a new galactic war was set. I don't think the possibility of a remnant of the old Empire lasting would work, unless they go for a much shorter timeline. Unless I am underestimating the power of modern CGI and it's ability to "de-age" people; I don't think a shortened timeline will work.
The other possibility, which is blasphemous, would be to go the route of a complete remake. You could start with VII, VIII, and IX with a new cast of our heroes. You can then remake ANH, ESB, and RotJ after the new films with these same actors.

I think you're right about a new villain. There always has to be a dark jedi element, but the prequels prove that the story fails when it's too Jedi-centric.
You could do a story where the remnants of the Empire break up into factions the alliance has to deal with, but that's going back to the well. What they need is a new story for a new generation. The original characters need to be on hand to help the new ones deal with the threat and ultimately pass the torch for them.
I like the idea of the story focusing on Han and Leia's kids, with Luke as mentor. But I don't want them to draw from the expanded universe of the novels and comics because that limits their choices.
Here's something from the old Han Solo novels they could do: Han used to square off against this organized crime syndicate that even the Empire wouldn't touch. In the chaos following the fall of the Empire those elements like the Hutts could come to power and be something that need to be dealt with.
As for the Jedi element, I wouldn't mind a quest to discover some ancient jedi hoodad like the Kaiburr crystal or something. I always thought that was a neat idea.
Yeah, and now that Disney owns Star Wars and Marvel, I'm just going to say what everyone's thinking: Hoojibs.
Hoojibs, Disney. Think about it.

Another potential "Dark Side" villain could be a secret apprentice of Palpatine. Maybe he foresaw the eventual (or potential) betrayal of Vader and started grooming a replacement. Once the Empire fell, he/she followed in Palpatine's footsteps and laid low; all the while honing the Dark Side skills.

Or Vader's apprentice. It'd be interesting if it were someone instructed by Vader who has a grudge against Luke for killing him.

I'd like the trilogy to bring the whole prophesy to a close, and have the next generation actually bring balance to the force by reconnecting the dark and light sides of the force so it doesn't have to be so black and white; that way everyone is just a Jedi, not a dark or light sided character, thus acknowledging the ability of individual people to have shades of grey, not just be good or evil.

I like that. One really good line from Revenge of the Sith is when he says only a Sith thinks in absolutes. Funny how Lucas writes that in but it's kind of the opposite of how the story plays out. There's something they can work with there, though.

It's comforting to know that they're at least trying to take it seriously and get real talent on board.

Now THAT'S just about the coolest thing a fan can do. I never knew there was an R2D2 builders club. I might have to give it a shot.

That's fun stuff.
Here's another guy I think would be good in a Star Wars movie: Chris Hemsworth. And James Purefoy. I've always liked him too.
