In answer to Gary's curiosity, the Abyss is available on DVD in a widescreen format. I recently got the Special Edition DVD, which includes the theatrical version (which I prefer) as well as the extended edition, both in widescreen format.
One reason HD versions on cable might defer to the full screen edition may be the extreme aspect ratio, which is 2.35:1 as opposed to the more common 1.85:1, which means it has to be letterboxed even on widescreen format TV's.
It's a great movie, though, so I'm glad it's available. This is actually my favorite Cameron movie, even though it's less popular in other circles. The theatrical edition is definitely better because it keeps the story and the conflict focused on the core characters, whereas the extended scenes unnecessarily expand the story to a global scale that takes away from the drama rather than adding to it. But the DVD has both versions, which I appreciate, so whichever one you prefer you can enjoy.

This is also one of my favorite movies and the scene where you finally meet the aliens is the best.

It's well done because you're so engrossed in the story that when it happens you're like "oh yeah, this is a scifi picture"; it's a great character piece. That's why I like the theatrical version better. The extended stuff with the tidal waves and the NTI's wanting to destroy humanity takes you too far out of the core story. It's a great movie though.

I prefer the theatrical version, as well.
I still love the "Russian water tentacle" line.

I love that movie. So much it makes me mad at Cameron because he's so dismissive of his pre-Titanic work.
