yeah that is funny Broox. ever since Avatar IMAX 3D (which was the best 3D i've ever seen) every 3D movie is trying to do the same...and failing miserably. the final straw for me was Spiderman 3D. the 3D was so bad and such a waste of money, despite the movie being bad as well. i took off my 3D glasses during the film and it everything looked the same. i was shafted for the very last time. NEVER AGAIN.
i wish i had seen the 3D Harold and Kumar Christmas because what i can tell on HBO is that they really did their best with utilizing 3D for almost every scene in the movie.

Yeah, I wanted to see Harold and Kumar just for the 3D gags. I don't care for 3D very much, but I'll watch it if it means seeing the movie on the Big D, which is the giant new theater they just built at the local Carmike. I got annoyed at Clash of the Titans (more because it sucked, but also because of this) because they made it 3D after the fact, so none of it was ever shot for 3D at all.
I think 3D still has its place in horror movies. I wish I'd gone to see Pirahna 3-D but no one wanted to go see it. I'm having trouble finding folks to see stupid movies with. But when they mug to the camera the gags are better. It's also more sincere when you're being dumb on purpose.
In most cases I think the 3D is incidental because it's a convention forced on directors by the studio and it's mostly just tolerated. I'm glad Christopher Nolan stood his ground against it with Dark Knight Rises, but most of the time directors just go along because they'll shoot the movie the way they want anyway.
The 3D in Avatar was good because James Cameron wanted to shoot it for 3D, but now they just do it because it's expected. The GI Joe sequel got pushed back so they could make it 3D, which is a bad sign all around. The Hobbit's going to be in 3D. I wonder if that sort of thing will work against its chances for an Oscar. I don't favor its chances anyway, since they gave Jackson his due for Return of the King, but any movie in 3D is definitely intended as a commercial blockbuster and not a serious film.

one thing i am not excited about are the lame Star Wars 3D editions coming out.
i REFUSE to pay for those movies anymore. makes me angry to think that people are still paying for those, AGAIN. it's like raising gasoline prices. nothing we can do. they have us by the balls and they know it. well, not these balls, not this time...no sir!
no offense if you are guilty of this, but you have some explaining to do.

Generally I agree with you, but Hugo is an exception for me. This was one movie where the director really thought about using the 3D, not just for gags but for depth of feel in all the scenes. It's a movie about fantasy in a way, and this makes it feel all the more fantastic. If the director and cinematographer use it well it can actually be a proper technique. If not, gimmick and annoying.

I can honestly say that I've never seen a movie in 3D. I remember we had 3D glasses (the cheap cardboard ones) for a movie when I was a kid, but the VHS was not in 3D. Sort of defeated the purpose.

And animated movies have better 3D because you don't have to work about that awkward transition between live shots and FX, but I could mostly take it or leave it. I wish I'd seen Hugo in 3D since you guys are so supportive of it, but I didn't see it in the theater at all because the ads made it look dumb to me.
I'm torn on the Star Wars movies. I'd like to see Empire in the theater again, but I haven't seen any of the re-mastered versions since '97, so I'm not sure if I would enjoy seeing the best movie of all time cut to shreds. I am a sucker for the part at the beginning of every movie where the logo pops up and the music kicks in. Maybe I should just pay to see that and then leave.

Yeah, the credits are always the best bit.
