Sean and Greg talk Prometheus and how it compares to other high profile prequels (especially Star Wars). They discuss it both as its own movie and compared to the original Alien films. Episode 157

Great discussion here boys! I do agree with most of your points about Prometheus, some of the actions of the characters were utterly unnaccountable. And did anyone else think what happens to Charlese Theron was a complete cop out? She's strong all the way through then, oh wait, that? That's all? Whatever. Anyhow, here's a link to a cracked.com article that discusses one of the fan remasters of Star Wars that Sean mentions in the episode. I've actually downloaded this version and watched it twice, first through I thought it was really good. Then I watched it with the little text messages that tell you where the alterations have been made, and then I got a little mad. Not only has this person cut out things like extraneous bad cg and conversations with Jabba that we wanted them to cut out, they've also gone in and re-edited some scenes to be... well I suppose they think they're making it better, but you don't go in and re-edit the fight scene between Darth Vader and Obiwan. So I'm torn on the issue. The guy did release a "purist" version where he just cleaned up the original version without messing with it, maybe he should have left it at that. If I don't like Lucas changing the movie I like it even less when a random does it. www.cracked.com/article_19906_6-pieces-fan-art-that-are-better-than-original.htmlHere's the guy's website where you can find links to download Star Wars revisited; swrevisited.wordpress.com/ NOTE FROM GILBERTO: READ FURTHER BEFORE MESSING WITH THAT DOWNLOAD. LYNN AND I BOTH HAD ISSUES THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN RELATED TO INSTALLING THAT DOWNLOADER.

I agree with that; a fan re-master shouldn't re-cut the movie. I can see the urge once they get started, but that road only leads to the same dark place it took Lucas and his people. "While we're here, Luke's hair has always made me crazy. If only it parted on the other side..." The first time they did the SW special edition they were so consumed with screwing up the stuff that worked they didn't even fix obvious things like the lightsaber FX in Ben's duel with Vader. You'd have to watch the old VHS version of the special edition to see it, but I swear it's true.

Jeez, could they make that download any more complicated? It's seriously easier to obtain a permit to carry a gun than it is to get an HD version of Star Wars.

Are you guys talking about the adywan movie? There's a distinction in the "community" between fan edits and preservations. Preservations are the way to go, they restore the movie the way it looked in theaters. There's a fantastic effort going on now with the folks at originaltrilogy at capturing actual 35mm prints of the trilogy (which are super rare because they are technically illegal to own). They hope to have them fully captured by the end of this year. It's really neat to see the telecine they've built. They should be HD quality to rival the blu rays, but of course without all the stupid crap. I have no doubt they'll release them on Dec 21 and thus bring about the end of the world when Emperor Lucas blows up the earth with his death star.

There's also a neat preservation called Puggo Grande that's a capture of a 16mm print of SW. Unlike the 35mm prints, 16mm prints were commercially available in the olden days. It looks all kinds of rough and scratched up but it's got a real 70's filmy charm to it. Here's a preview they put on youtube
I have it if you're interested and don't want to bother with torrents. They're also making a Puggo Strikes Back as we speak. Cool stuff.
ps: Here's a funny video made by puggo about an 8mm capture. It's cute

All I know is, DON'T DOWNLOAD THE ADYWAN STUFF! After I downloaded everything but the thing the downloader site said I was downloading, my computer succumbed to massive amounts of spyware to the point where doing a system restore was the only way to fix it. Everything seems okay now, but Jeez. If I can bittorrent a good HD version of SW I will, but damn a bunch of these other sites.

Gilbert you did click on a bunch of random buttons that said "download!" I mean really, it's not like it's Wonderland's fault that Alice kept eating all that food that said "eat me" she should have known better. That being said I did blue screen out yesterday for the first time in ages so there could be a correlation there, though I only downloaded the thing I was supposed to. Yes Broox, we're talking about the Adywan movie. It's nice to know that some fans aren't just whinging about what they're not given by the creator and just doing it themselves. God helps those who help themselves, right?

All I know is I had to do a system restore for the first time ever, so they can keep their jdownloader that didn't even work anyway.

I saw all your postings on the originaltrilogy forum, Brooks. I've got the original trilogy on laserdisc and a laserdisc player if you'd be interested in doing a capture from that. Should be better than the VHS grabs.

I would love to try that! Apparently laserdiscs suffer from a thing called "laser rot," something I didn't know before. I wonder how yours are faring? Do you know which set you've got? I've always wanted to see a laser disc - I've never actually seen one much less watched one.
I'm also interested in you holiday special. The copy I have is a copy of yours so its a further generation down. I've learned a lot reading that forum, it makes me tempted to clean up the old tv show again, I think I could make it look better, but then again nobody would care.
If you guys are into this stuff you should definitely look at that forum, there's a lot of neat projects going on out there. Not just star wars stuff.

Actually, when it comes to the laser discs I may hit Greg up and see if he's got access to better video capture tech than I have. Might as well do it right.

I like how Greg will have a capture of Star Wars but I tried for 10 years to get him to capture The Bug and it never even made it out of his car. The last two years have just been trying to get the beta tape back. I'm just going to make a DVD out of the VHS capture. Who really cares about The Bug?

Well I doubt that Greg will do the SW capture either, it would take a lot longer to do than the Bug. If we do talk him into it we can try to do the Bug too while we're at it. I can scan film now, I got a nice scanner on clearance at microcenter. I've been scanning my old negatives. If you want I could try scanning the bug film to get HD res, but you'd need to re-edit it from scratch.
One positive thing about that would be that I could do a lot to make it look really nice nowadays, technology has come a long way. But, like you say, much like the old show, who cares?
