the Special Edition 3D remastered BluRay rerelease anniversary limited edition!Actually, it's none of those things. But I made good on my long standing threat to monkey around with it and add some new effects Lucas style. I couldn't recreate the whole trailer because I didn't have a lot of the audio. So here it is in its original form and then some of the scenes I played with. (the rotoscoping is sloppy, but gracious I didn't want to put too much time into something only 2 or three people will see ) Warning: bad language, don't watch at work or with the kids

Language warning on this one for Gretchen. Also, nice hair.... wait, do you guys swap hair half-way through?

Gilberto had an actual ponytail at that time, that might be what's causing the confusion. Oh and thanks for the language warning, I should have thought of that, I'll add it to the first post. What did you think of the effects?

That'd be it. The effects in the modern version were good. I've seen tutorials on how to do them, but I suspect there's more than one way of doing it. Were you guys actually fighting with props that were green or did you just pretend to be hitting each others' bits? I like the space ship background.

Brooks, remember when you and I were tasked with putting together a highlight reel for Sean and Jason and Science Fiction was the highlight of what we had to work with. That was the saddest reel of all time. I like to remind big time director Jason of that, regularly.

Were you guys actually fighting with props that were green or did you just pretend to be hitting each others' bits? I like the space ship background. The lightsabers were actually very cool. I built them out of pvc pipe and painted the handles silver and black and added nuts and bolts to them to make them look real, I think they looked quite good. I painted the blades bright green because the plan was to chroma key the lightsaber effect onto the footage. I still think that was a pretty good idea (there was no after effects at that time) but the lighting in the fight scene was so poor that the chroma key didn't work well (that made the modern rotoscoping hard too.) The blasters were also pretty cool props made from water guns. We actually put a lot of work into the original on the production side, I didn't have anything to do with the editing so I'm not sure how they did it. I still have some of the sabers and blasters in the basement somewhere.

Actually I had forgotten all about that ;D I think I have a copy of that reel somewhere in the raw footage I captured during the ITH capture days. Is Jason really a big time director now? To give you an idea of how professional the Science Fiction shoot was, Jason wasn't wearing a shirt when shooting the lightsaber scene. I have a pic to prove it.

But we're not allowed to post pictures of Jason anymore...
We did chroma key on the lightsabers, which is why they're such a dull blue. I had to use the same background so I couldn't make them different colors. The new FX actually make the whole thing look a lot cooler than it was. Too bad there's not a filter we can use to make it funny. The bloopers were actually funnier; we should have just gone with them.
We actually screened that at DragonCon in '99. The only laugh we ever got was for the puppet scene. That came off okay.

Those props were pretty cool. I still have some of them. And I still have Admiral Sharkbar on my wall.

Though making those new scenes was a lot of work I can definitely see why people enjoy making fan films, its neat to put yourself into that universe.
The DV raw footage holds up pretty well by today's standards. We shot it on a canon GL1. In 1999 that was the first time I had ever seen a DV camera. I wish we had been able to shoot all our old stuff on it.

Loved the parody. The modern special effects really popped. Looks like you guys were having fun with it.

I thought I did an ok job on the fx until I saw this commercial, now I know I'll never be able to compete with professional commercial makers... ;D
