Why do they all have to be so creepy looking? Why can't they look like Twiki or R2D2 or something??

they keep trying to make them look like people, that's why. Everyone loved R2D2 for a reason

Read about the Uncanny. The new revision of "Apocalypse Party" has whole chapters about it, but read Jentsch or Freud (Jentsch is better); it's all about the unheimlich. The more familiar something is without being familiar the creepier it becomes. Jentsch and Masahiro Mori linked it to movement. Anything that moves when it shouldn't or doesn't move when it should (or in this case, like it should) is creepy. Freud thought it was all about repressed memory, but he thought that about everything.
