This is the original Pierre Boulle novel that was the basis for "Planet of the Apes". The original English translation was published in the UK under the title "Monkey Planet", but in the US it was published to coincide with the release of the film, so it bore the "Planet of the Apes" title, which is a closer translation of the title anyway.
For anyone who's a fan of the original film, this is a really interesting read. The story is surprisingly similar to the movie, although the twist ending (SPOILER ALERT) is more akin to Tim Burton's "reimagining" than to Rod Serling's classic Statue of Liberty gag. The ape civilization is more advanced in the book, but that was toned down in the movie in order to maintain a lower budget. The planet is actually another planet also, a sister world in the Betelguese system that the astronauts name Soror. The main character, being French, is also much more civilized and accommodating than Taylor is in the movie. For some reason every time someone casts Charlton Heston in an adaptation of a book the character is immediately transformed into a nihilistic savage.
Good read and a ridiculously short book, so I'd definitely recommend it for POTA fans.
