One word: Magical. This film got mismarketed as a kids film when it's really an adult film about children and their adventures. It is an absolute must-see for anyone who claims to be a film/history buff, with a ton of historical details (including the Paris train derailment of 1895). I've seen some comments on IMDB complaining that it was a slow and boring story but the "slow" parts just added to character development.
And some of the best 3D I've seen. Seriously, see it in 3D, you won't be disappointed.

I've been intrigued by the commercials, especially since its a Scorsese flick. The commercials really leave you wondering "what is this movie about???"

Essentially it's about an orphaned kid living in the train station in Paris and his prize possession of a mechanical man. He spends about half the movie trying to fix this mechanical man that was badly rusted with age and when he does, the automaton draws a picture of a rocket in the moon's face. This leads him to discover the work of Georges Melies, and it takes off from there.

There's a robot in it? You should have led with that.

I was extremely pleased with this movie, the accent pet peeve notwithstanding. I was annoyed that they didn't market it as being about Melies, but seeing the movie I realized that's supposed to be sort of a secret. It's a great homage to him and his work. I would like to see someone do an Ed Wood style tribute film that utilized his creative style and set design. Maybe this movie will bring him more into the modern consciousness.
