Finally read "A Princess of Mars". I'm trying to catch up on John Carter before the new movie comes out.
Burroughs has a really fun imagination, despite some anachronistic anti-culturalism. His style holds up against its contemporary analogs in the area of adventure. Like heroes of the time, Carter is a bit more bloodthirsty than heroes of today, but that helps to illustrate how the genre has evolved for the positive.
