Burgess' early books like this one and "Hellmouths of Bewdley" are more abstract than the film version he wrote of "Pontypool" (in which I think he perfected the message of the story).
But you really should read Burgess. He's a poet who writes horror in a dream state. He also has a unique take on zombies, apocalypses, and the horrors of the mundane world.
