Kurt Vonnegut may be the writer whose style I would most want to emulate. While this book doesn't measure up to "Slaughterhouse Five", it still has that deadpan ridiculous style of marrying the darkest aspects of the world with the abstract and the absurd.
I'm boning up on all the End of the World stories I can, and this one's definitely one of the more interesting ones.

In high school I read this book in one day. It took all day, but to this day its the only book I've ever read that I couldn't put down. Ice-Nine! Fun stuff!

Slaughterhouse Five was like that for me, but another point for Vonnegut is that his books are quick reads.
