Okay, so this may be an open door to the cult/sci-fi buffs, but I really don't know how well-know this mini-series is outside of Europe. It dates to 2007 so you guys must probably have at least heard of it.
I was amazed this was never aired on any channel in Europe, not even the BBC, at least not to my knowledge.
It's kinda hard to put a label on the show since it's about mundane objects with special powers. Is it sci-fi? Don't know, don't care really. If you like twilight-zone-esque stories you'd probably wanna watch this.
The story is about a cop who one day chases a petty criminal down an alley and finds the criminal mysteriously disappeared. Later he discovers the guy he was chasing had a key that fits all locks and always (from any door it opens) leads to one room in an abandoned motel. The key turns out to be a 'special object' from that room. Other objects from that room have unique powers too and are secretly being sought after by different groups of people. One day his daughter disappears in the room and he has to get her back. The story has very simple character motivations within a complex elaborate plot, which I prefer above the other way around.
If you have seen it tell me what you think. I thought it was brilliant.

I watched the first episode a while back when Andrew recommended it to me. I loved the concept, and the idea that there are hundreds of seemingly normal objects from the room that each have a unique power, and the mystery of what the room is, but the characters themselves (particularly the main cop guy) didn't really grab me. They were trying to be funny in parts but he didn't really seem funny, they were trying to be serious but he didn't pull it off in my opinion. I found myself not really excited about watching the rest of it.

I watched the first episode yesterday and I agree with Brooks. The cop didn't seem that surprised that there was this motel room there. There were also a lot of little things that annoyed me, like leaving the key on the table for his daughter to find. His daughter who was really irritating. But the concept was solid. I'd like to see the BBC do it.

Yeah, I agree on those. Maybe with a better cast and some script-tweaks the BBC could turns this into something good. I guess I was more into the idea and concept of the series than paying any attention to small details like acting and such

Oh the concept is killer. And all I saw was the first episode, they may well have ironed out the kinks after a while. First episodes are usually kind of awkward anyways.

Sure, it's always more difficult to sell the concept initially than just run with it like you can later on.
