I just bought the blu ray of LOTR extended set, even though it only had those three documentaries that weren't on the dvd box set, one of which we had already because we bought the other special boxed edition of just that movie just to get that documentary, because Ben is an uber Tolkien fan and wanted it. I was a little bit like, $120 just for a couple of docs we've not got? Is it worth it. Then I actually watched the Blu ray version of the movies and man, I think it was worth every penny. They look spectacular (Some colour issues in the first movie notwithstanding, I think it adds to the fantasy look) and they sound amazing. If you've got the good big tv and blu ray player and they've done a proper transfer of the film and worked on it I think it's worth it... for LOTR. For a visual feast like that. I don't know if I want to see more detail on Jar Jar though...

UG.... I hadn't even thought of the LOTR movies. You're making me want a blu ray even more. Still, I'm a little peeved about having all these dvd's if I"m going to get them again on blu ray.

the good thing is that the blu ray player still plays the dvds, so you only have to get blu ray of things that are worth it.

Personally I'm mildly fascinated by the evolution of digital media. For example here's a short article about how they're upconverting a psp game for HD ps3: arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/the-journey-to-60fps-ars-talks-god-of-war-origins-on-ps3.arsAnd there's been talk for a while now of selling music at the superior bit depth of 24 instead of the cd standard 16. This should, theoretically, make everyone want to repurchase all their albums the same way dvd owners will move to blu ray. It's a silly notion however, because with huge HD tv's the difference is apparent but on an ipod or car stereo or whatever you would NEVER hear that difference.

I know I'm just a simple asshole, but I really think all this emphasis on quality is annoying. I remember in the 90's when HDTV was a buzz word. As opposed to 525 scan lines on NTSC video and 625 for PAL (if I remember correctly), HDTV would have 2000!!!!! And there was this cartoon on the wall of the general manager's office at the radio station where we worked, comparing two parallel images. On the left was a fuzzy image of a garbage can with the caption "television". To its right was the exact same image of the trash can, now in perfect clarity, with the caption "High Definition Television". Near it he had also clipped a quote and posted it on the wall. It said "television must be a medium because it is neither rare nor well done."
This masturbatory re-tooling of everything is just digital OCD, polishing the same spot until it's rubbed bare and barren, until it's robbed of all texture and reality. And as an audience we're literally buying it, sucking up every every stripped down version of the movies we love like they will somehow have more to offer instead of less. It's all becoming sanitized and sterile-looking, and that's why they don't provoke any feeling in us. It's like dating a really hot girl who has no personality. You feel like you should be enjoying it, but you don't know why you can't. Modern movies are making us feel empty, and dissatisfied with the new waves of crap they're cranking out, they're actually taking the ones that were good and scraping off the wear and grit that made them real to us in the first place.
I'm so glad we have the internet and YouTube, these nothing outlets where you can put out shit with no concern for form or quality. I will never make anything that is worth putting on Blu Ray, and the internet's given guys like me a medium.
I'm sorry, what was the question?

Jesus Sean, did you forget to take your grumpy old man pills this morning? All I'm saying is that the pretty butterfly is pretty and the pretty makes me happy. Don't spoil my buzz with your cranky old man there was nothing wrong with cassette tapes rant. Can't we love Dr Horrible as well as HDTV? Share the love Gilbert, love the butterfly, drink the kool-aid.

I think we all appreciate cd's over cassettes. And I remember loving dvd's over vhs. I agree with Sean though that when we start altering the original (instead of just presenting it in a cleaner/clearer format) we're rewriting history, and that's seldom a good idea.
There was a great scene in the simpsons where bart sees a commercial for a new video game system and instantly throws his current one into the fireplace. As it burns up it says "I can still bring you joooyyyyy....."

That shit 'aint right! I stick by my claim that a little polishing for a blu ray transfer is one thing, but changing, and changing to make it dumber, is soooooooooo wrong. Next thing we'll have a director's cut where he adds back in all those deleted scenes which were so bad his friends told him to edit them "And you call yourself human." I could go on about why this nooooooooooo is wrong but I don't need to, do I? Bleh! I might go punch something.

And yet he keeps leaving that ridiculous looking shot of Luke falling (after he learns Vader is his father) in Empire. I remember when I was a kid thinking that shot didn't look quite right. He is grey (shoddy compositing) and the physics of how he falls don't quite seem right. Whatever. Keep adjusting the color of the lightsabers, Darth Lucas.

MY...GOD...IN...HEAVEN.... This might just be a deal breaker for me. I'm thinking twice about picking these up now. I guess Lucas is ok with losing fans. You know, he's changing a popular movie to bring it in line with an unpopular one. Shouldn't he be doing it the other way around?? Someone joked that the orig soundtrack had been replaced by Queen. After watching this I think that might work out pretty well, check out how much more exciting this otherwise dull scene becomes:

Broox, I suggest we put your two excellent posts together and contract Ryan Reynolds and Elijah wood to taze George Lucas in the ass; while playing Queen music. And throwing his blu rays on the ground.

It just dawned on me. What do you think the odds are that Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett, Commander Cody, Republic Officer 1 - 38, et al) makes an appearance in the original saga? I'll bet it is about the same as the possibility of five central characters successfully navigating an asteroid field.
