Comics characters are so long-lived that they periodically get a new look because, as you can see in this case, it makes the news. The archetype slowly evolves over generations, but every now and then they make a drastic change to get attention and draw in new readers. I'm more concerned with the fact that Action Comics might be rebooting to issue #1. 900 issues is quite a legacy to abandon. But Superman's post-Crisis reboot restarted the "Superman" title at # 1 while keeping the legacy of the original series by renaming it "The Adventures of Superman". Maybe Action Comics will do something similar. As for Superman's look, even he's not above fashion experiments. After his resurrection in the 90's he sported Samson-style long hair: And after that he had a disastrous dalliance with rave club glow-sticking style: But Superman's classic look is exactly that: Classic. The virtue of comics being so long-lived is that they follow cycles. Every now and then they want to innovate, but sooner or later they come back to the core values of the characters.
