Sean's been posting his Horror movie survival tips on his twitter, but I thought I'd post my latest thoughts here so everyone can comment. Because I have twitter fans. Because I can't be bothered tweeting. Anyway, so I was thinking about Vacancy, how the whole idea is that the hotel people murder couples sell videos to truckies and I thought; wow, these truckies are depraved people. Then I thought; when in horror movies are truckies not someone you should keep away from? Half the time they're the killer, from Duel to Roadkill. Even when they're not killing you they're not a safe-haven, the killer already has their number or something. In fact I can't think of many good truckers in horror. In normal films they're often just pleasant, laid back and helpful to whomever is running from the law, but in horror, I don't know... it's all murdering prostitutes. So maybe in horror movies avoid truckers?

I second this. I would go so far as to say avoid truckers and trucks. In the Hitcher he uses trucks to draw and quarter the girl and in Maximum Overdrive the trucks themselves are the killers. Even in comedies truckers turn out to be rapist weirdos or ghost monsters like Large Marge.
Joy Ride is a good example of this and another good horror rule, which warns against practical jokes. In horror movies practical jokes always go horribly wrong. In that sorority movie pretending the girl is dead gets her killed and makes her a vengeful ghost, which is as wrong as it gets.

Yes, practical joking is what started off the killer in Roadkill, if I recall correctly. And it didn't do a certain someone any good in Zombieland.

know what's weird? Joyride and Roadkill are the same movie. Isn't is strange that they rename them for different countries?

Yeah, is joy ride not a phrase abroad? Funny that roadkill is a more accessible term.

Ha! You haven't seen Australian roads then have you? Nothing but dead kangaroos. Also, about the heels thing, it's funny how often survivor girl is wearing heels and she's fine. There's already been some discussion about it in Cloverfield. The only thing is that heel-wearing girl usually isn't virginal survivor girl, but it does happen. In real life she'd be on her face in minutes but movie people like heels.

Yeah, is joy ride not a phrase abroad? Funny that roadkill is a more accessible term. They should have called that movie "candy cane." That's all I remember from that gem.

I agree. I remember the creepy Candy Cane voice, that's what they should have called it. Also, the awesome scene where the ice truck explodes.
