I thought I'd start a topic giving quick reviews of albums that you guys might want to check out. Don't be hatin'!
For starters, just to show how unpretentious and non-indie I can be, is Ke$ha's Animal (2010)
Some will call me crazy, but I really like this album! Firstly, it's undeniably catchy. I dare you to listen to it and say it's not catchy. It's held back a bit by excessive use of autotune (the flavor of the week, I thought, but it's been going on for some time now :. The lyrics are negligible, mostly references to being drunk and taking clothes off over and over again, but we don't listen to albums like this for the lyrics. I think what I like best about it is the distinct 80's vibe I get from it. Not sure what it is, perhaps her bratty valley girl delivery mixed with the layered synths and the exuberant choruses. These tracks would've fit seamlessly into a 1980's top 40 radio station rotation. The only tracks I don't like are Stephen, which is a little Disneyfied, and Dinosaur which hails from the "we like the cars that go boom" era. Overall, a surprisingly charming and engaging effort.
A lot of people have strong opinions against her (Cracked has a whole article telling us how gross she is : www.cracked.com/funny-4433-ke24ha/). Her singles are massively successful. The Simpsons even set one of their intro's to her Tik Tok track generating tons of negative internet responses. I don't know anything about her personally so I have no opinion on this. Allmusic says she wrote the songs so that impresses me. I'm just trying to judge the album by itself and its own merits. If you like some bratty fun I recommend it!
