Sean and Johnny return to talk about what makes a great villain. Who was the greater villain, Frankenstein or his monster? Is Dexter Morgan a hero or a villain? Why can't we seem to create a Darth Vader or a Freddy Krueger for movies today? Why hasn't Star Trek had a great villain since Khan? Have we just lost the ability to create great heroes and villains? media.libsyn.com/media/darkcrazy/TVAMD_HV2.mp3

What about Voldemort? do you guys mention Voldemort? I'll have to listen and find out. I like him because he bucks the trend of modern baddies who all have to have some lame-ass reason for being bad. He's bad because he's evil. He's just evil. That's it. Awesome. That's why our villains are lame. Now I better listen and see if you agree.
*** there you go, you mention Harry Potter. No, Harry Potter isn't going to be Han Solo, obviously Ron is. He's totally Han Solo. He's the scruffy off-sider to "the chosen one", he gets the hot chick... etc. Harry is Luke. It even has that element where someone is getting it on with someone's sister, although switched up a bit.

Dude! Too much Frankenstein talk! Now what are we going to talk about on our Frankenstein episode!!!!!!! ??!!!!!! Also, I think it's funny that you guys keep thinking up reasons why the Myans might have ended the calendar in 2012 that didn't include the world ending. But that's not even the point. So what if the Myans thought the world was ending? Why would we believe them? Why should we get upset just because one dead race decided the world was ending now? Haven't we already lived through a bunch of predicted apocalypses anyway? Why is this one going to be the one?

Valdemort was not on my list for 2 reasons: 1) I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter. It's fun, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. 2) Valdemort is not a very good villain to me. His motives are unclear , his plans are unnecessarily elaborate with no real productive outcome and he doesn't seem very powerful to me.
Just bein' bad isn't a sufficient motivation for all his wicked plans. He may be driven by evil, but he needs a specific reason for taking specific actions. There's a focus to what he does, but it's never properly established or explained.
How is tricking Harry into competing in a wizard contest the best way to kidnap him? Why not just send an owl with a magic cup that transports him when he touches it? Why did it have to be the goblet of fire? Or why not whammy the magic shoe they use at the beginning of the movie or any of a hundred magical doodads Harry's constantly touching for no reason?
Valdemort never fights his own battles, which leads me to think he can't. He couldn't even kill Harry when he was an infant, and their conflict finally comes to fruition when Harry is 10. He spends years in obscurity losing intellectual battles with children who are too distracted by their own problem to recognize that he's even trying to kill them, and when he's finally resurrected everyone's all scared of what he'll do but he does even less than he did when he was trapped inside his diary or some weirdo's head. The only time we see Valdemort fight at all is when Dumbledore razzles him at the end of Order of the Phoenix. Scary face, but not a very scary guy.

No, I agree that as a villain he falls short of being anything other than a plot device, but at least he's just bad for bad's sake. I like that. I had crappy backstory. Boring, slideshow. Better than being bad because of the trailer park upbringing or something, yes?
