First of all, there's not a thread for Super 8? I looked through all 6 pages and didn't see one. Anyways, I watched it last night and thought it was pretty fun. But I have a bone to pick with the logic of it. The monster I'll allow, but the train crash, the train crash...
It's not really a spoiler since they show it in the trailer but what happens is a truck on the tracks derails an air force train and then a monster breaks out of one of the cars. The train crashes in a spectacular way, cars flying through the air and explosions everywhere. I mean it is really over the top. And to top it all of, the guy driving the truck survives.
Now, here's what REALLY happens when a truck and train collide
Notice how the train not only stays on the rails, it doesn't even slow down! I suppose the air force builds crappy trains??
Also, why could the monster bash his way out after the crash but not before?

I thought this movie was a mess. They do a lot of fun mysterious build-up without showing the monster, like it's Jaws or something, but as more of the story is revealed the less of it actually makes sense.
This is a classic Spielberg idea. It doesn't know if it's a fun adventure about a bunch of kids or something serious or what. And the ending is so tonally confused that I actually found myself thinking "what am I supposed to be feeling right now? Am I happy for the monster? Do I want the monster to win?" Oy.
At the point they created this evil government plot we were supposed to start feeling sorry for the alien, but in every scene it just wants to kill and destroy rampantly. JJ Abrams needs to learn that a mystery only works as long as it makes sense after it's revealed.
And the train crash? After all that business the guy in the truck is still alive when they find him. Jeez.

I want to like JJ Abrams but it seems like stylistically, he's a one-note man. First the lens flares, and then his monsters all look the same.

Yeah, let's bring in the puppet people to at least design the monsters, even if you're going to use CG to animate them.

Let's give Abrams credit for bringing monster movies back into the mainstream. As full of holes as they may be I still enjoy them.

I didn't even make it to the end of this, I got bored and wandered off. After the train crash was so unbelievable (why are they running alongside this crash rather than away from it? Why are they not affected by the explosions? Why didn't a cow land on their head?) then it went on and on about the little kids' feelings. Blah blah blah zzzzzzzzz

I liked it for the most part. Once I got over the ridiculous lens flares and the cliche evil government, I could appreciate the retro 80's feel and the kids' story. At least they didn't bring in Michael Bay to blow allot of shit up.

...I could appreciate the retro 80's feel and the kids' story. Yeah I kind of liked the goonies vibe. It wasn't amazing or anything but I'm surprised you guys feel so strongly against it.

I liked the kids, but I felt like they were in the wrong movie. It didn't know if it was supposed to be cute or scary.
I really liked Cloverfield, but I thought this one was a misfire.
