Yeah, there's a lot of carnivorous marsupials, they had to fill all the niches.

That does look like a good scientific basis for Big Reg, given there is a history of over-sized killer kangaroos. And if at all possible, try to work a demon duck of doom into the story.
Or maybe that's a sequel idea...

Maybe your apocalypse could smoke out Australian megafauna thought to be instinct, instead of creating a mutation. That way you could have Big Red and any other weird species (like demon ducks). Go Jurassic Park with it, with Big Red as the marquee baddie, like the T Rex.

How about a pissed-off platypus? They are freaky enough as they are with their mammalian venom and all. Your back story could be that some bloke killed his mate while furring. The platypus swears vengeance on all humans that wear animal products and goes on the warpath with the assistance of an evil Aboriginal witchdoctor.
This has got SciFi Channel written all over it.

Feel free to develope any of these ideas for yourself. I'm going to continue with Big Red for now, maybe do something bigger in the sequel I guess but I'm probably not going to explain what the creature is and why anyhow. I think it's probably more likely that an apocalypse caused a mutant roo than some extict creatures came back to life.

Megaduck vs Giant Octagoose. I look foreward to it.
