Saw Skyline today. It was painfully bad in almost every way, which is disappointing because it looked good. Thing is, the guys who directed it are special effects dudes who think they can make movies, when all they can make are big messes (they also did Predator v Alien: Requiem). Quite telling is the fact that one of the characters is a special effects producer who lives "like a gangster". The story was really lackluster, nothing much really happens apart from the whole alien invasion thing which in the end makes no sense. There's a lot of running about, but since it all happens in one building it gets old pretty quickly. There's also loads of scenes where people argue for no reason. The effects are good, but the actors aren't great, script lackluster, and the ending quite frankly made me angry. Apparently they're wanting to do a sequel. I hope they don't. Similar to Cloverfield in the idea of being the nobodies in the apocalyptic scenario, without that movie's characters, acting, drama, restraint and ending. I like Cloverfield well enough, but Skyline makes it look like a masterpiece. But you know, the aliens were really cool even if they made no sense at all, the effects great, the acting did well enough and it's fun enough if you don't think about it. Not a dead loss I guess.

I actually liked the bit where they "hypnotised" people into coming out, kind of creepy. And the car stomping was awesome. The end though...unforgiveable.

Yeah, it was sad because the concept and designs were good, but they needed someone good to go over the script and say "Hey, that lame ending postscript, totally not necessary. And why aren't these characters doing anything?"

What they really needed was someone to look at the script and say, "Hey, there really isn't a story here. We might want to do something about that before we film." My guess is that the response was something like, "We'll get that in editing."
Horrible waste of good monsters.

I agree, the monsters were good. I guess they just thought the monsters would carry the movie. Or that plot wasn't important. Or perhaps they just really don't understand plot?
