Talking to EW he revealed that part of their motivation behind casting Richard Armitage (an actor best known for playing a sexy spy on MI:5) as the Dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, was a desire to find the next Legolas for geeky girls to put on their posters. Jackson explains, “Thorin Oakenshield is a tough, heroic character, and he certainly should give Leggie and Aragorn a run for their money in the heartthrob stakes — despite being four feet tall.”

I... I... um. Words fail me. Surely he's just winding up the reporters here? If not, and they actually succeed at selling beefcake posters of a dwarf... I think my faith in the weirdness of reality will be fully restored. Bless you Peter Jackson.

After years of imagining dwarves as Jack Black with a beard, it’s an unexpected notion, but maybe one worth getting behind. With thirteen dwarf characters it makes sense to differentiate them from each other in some pretty distinct ways, and somebody has to be the movie’s hunky hero character. If not a dwarf, then who? Speaking as a perennially bearded human, I can get behind the notion of a heavily facial-haired sex symbol.

I just really hope that they learnt their lesson with Gimli and realise that all those prosthetics aren't necessary. If they mess with Richard Armitage's face I may not be accountable for my actions.
A few odd picks here, but really they have to do something with them, let's face it all they let Gimli be is comic relief. PEter Jackson is terrific at casting (I mention this in our upcoming Lord of the Rings episode) so I trust him. I just don't trust him with prosthetics around...
