Sean and Brooks talk distributed computing with Andrew. Will the Cloud democratize the internet or will it be the real-life SkyNet? There is also a little follow-up discussion of District 9 and Idiocracy. media.libsyn.com/media/darkcrazy/TVAMD_epoc1.mp3

The only files I ever have are music and movie files and invoices. The music and movie files would be pointless to put in a cloud and I sure as hell don't want the potential of someone seeing how much I make, or where my assignment was on a particular day.

I like online file storage for transferring big files like the audio recordings we generate when recording the show, but it's not an ideal place for personal information. I think the cloud will offer wonderful advances in external processing and programming, but you should store your data locally.

(Probably won't have a chance to listen to it for a few days, but just wanted to register my approval.)

I hear ya. Now that the holidays are out of the way I am ready to get back to work. Part 2 will be out next week and we'll have some more new episodes with some new guest hosts too.
Plus, episode 100 is very close and that's an invitation open to anyone who wants to participate.

I think this episode suffered greatly by my abscence. Cloud computing is fascinating to me, but I'm still a little suspicious of it. I too am worried about loss of data stored in the cloud. I wonder if they are looking at storing data by fragmenting like one does when using a RAID array. That way if one or more servers are lost the data could be reconstructed.

I'm sure that redundancy is already part of the infrastructure. In a virtual environment data isn't stored on a single server any more than programs are run from a single server.

What, no Starky? I register my protest by refusing to listen to this episode. Well... maybe I'm not that extreme... but I register my protest! Starky, be more available! We miss your dusky baritone and common sense when you're not there. Every comedy needs a straight.... straighter... straightish? man to balance it.

You know he doesn't visit the forum, right? Starky will return soon, though. I promise. He's not pulling a Brooks on us or anything.

I don't want any of you leave! Starky comes on every now and then and just searches his name, so he'll get all my messages like; Starky come back to us!

If you really want his attention, send him a facebook message. We'll be sans Starky just a little longer, but he'll be back in a couple of episodes.
You'll all be back in a couple of episodes, if this ep100 thing goes my way.

You know he doesn't visit the forum, right? Starky will return soon, though. I promise. He's not pulling a Brooks on us or anything. "Pulling a Brooks"? What is that exactly?! He was there -- I heard him! (By the way, first time through listening to this podcast, I missed the part where Andrew dropped out. Spent the whole time wondering why you invited him and then didn't even let him talk. ;D) Brooks, your qualms about cloud computing stem from the unreliability of your connection but I'm not sure "free Internet for everyone" would really fix that. I mean ... look how reliable the holodeck was when the Federation ran it. Maybe the model of electricity/gas used here in the U.S. would work (aren't the utilities some kind of government regulated "public for-profit" set up?) But yeah - I think the network is definitely the weak point in cloud computing; more so than server crashes or privacy leaks. And Sean, I totally agree that that adapting viruses like Conficker are more likely to become self-aware and trigger the e-pocalypse than search engines or DARPA projects. Unless ... hmmm ... unless they are DARPA projects. Oh crap!

We're called Skynet. Seriously, we're not trying to take over the world.
